September 6 is the Great Northwest Fall Bike Tour, a 15, 30, 50 or 85-mile ride on (paved) country roads around Newport. The ride begins at Newport City Park and includes aid stations and a meal at the finish.

Fresh Abundance has closed its Spokane Valley store due to zoning problems, according to the Spokesman-Review. When she sought to expand the building, owner Eden BrightSpirit Hendrix was informed the property is not zoned for the store — although the location has housed a store for over fifty years, according to Hendrix.
Hendrix has plans to move the store and adjacent farm, but OTM wonders: if they can change zoning for a big box store why can’t they do it for local farm and organic grocery?

The Fat Tire Trail Riders Club will be building intermediate-level wood features for the Beacon Hill skills park this week. Help ‘em out!

Meet at the Skills Park in Camp Sekani.

The Spokesman-Review has posted a video chronicling 60-year-old Spokane mountaineer Kay LeClaire’s climb up Mount Everest. She is the second oldest American woman to have reached the summit, and in doing so, she completed the seven summits. Check it out!

OTM publisher Jon Snyder took the District 2 lead yesterday in primary elections for Spokane City Council. He will compete against runner-up Mike Allen in the November 4th general elections.

As part of the nationwide Adopt-A-Crag Day, North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits is hosting an Adopt-A-Crag climbing crag cleanup Saturday, Aug. 29 at Q’emiln Riverside Park in Post Falls.
Cleanup begins at 8 a.m. Volunteers will receive free food and giveaways from location recreational outfitters in the afternoon. Volunteers will help refurbish trails, dispose of trash, remove graffiti and perform other light duties.

In a forum presented by the Spokane County Democrats, the Center for Justice and Gonzaga Law School, presenters will share their ideas on how to improve current policies.
