Mayor Gets Moving on Climate Change

7:57 pm

I got a email yesterday from Mayor Mary Verner’s office inviting folks to a Planning for Climate Change and Energy Security event on February 6.

This is very cool. No pun intended.

I hope a lot of folks attend. This seems like a great opportunity to advocate for more non-motorized transportation in Spokane. You can read the complete email here: (more…)

Big Ideas for Spokane

5:06 pm

curling41.jpg

The Inlander emailed a couple weeks ago asking me to contribute “some big, stupid, revolutionary ideas that the Spokane area can — and should — implement in 2008.” Here’s what I sent back:

At the risk of being too policy oriented:
1. Adopt a comprehensive plan to reestablish the salmon run in the Spokane River–all the way to their historical spawning grounds at the base of the Monroe St. Bridge.
2. Implement a major Transit Oriented Development initiative–including light rail.
3. Abandon the North South Freeway project.

They must not have liked the last two ideas becuase they only interviewed me about the first one. (The salmon idea is one that I credit Brian Flett for giving me when I interviewed him for OTM‘s very first issue in 2004. Otherwise known as the issue that resurrected the downtown whitewater park from the dead.)

Now that I have thought about it more there’s one other idea I wish I would have shared. We need a way to capture more tourist dollars from Canada. Why not build a curling rink?

Cycling Album Cover

8:43 pm

My call for outdoor recreation album covers has finally yielded a masterpiece. I just about did a back-flip when this image showed up in my email box courtesy of Hank Greer. Apparently the record is some sort of soft jazz-rock fusion, but the cover is 100% hardcore: classic 70′s cycling gear straddling the center line.

Evel Slaps A Child

Evel album
With the passing of the great Evel Knievel I thought folks might dig this excerpt from his excellent 1974 LP. This sequence is part of ‘Evel Talks with Kids.” Apparently he’s trying explain how painful it is to crash on his bike.

Beauty Mt. Warming Hut Report

10:10 pm

Regular OTM reader Tanner Grant has been posting some really cool trip reports at www.nwhikers.net. His latest is a snowshoe trek from Mt. Spokane:

“With good weather in the forecast I couldn’t spoil a good opportunity to get my ass outdoors. These days are far a few between with my new son Jameson in the picture, but i’m one lucky bastard, and I know that. It’s amazing how quickly your priorities change in life once you have held your first child.

Anyway, Robin and I dropped Jameson off with grandma about 10am and made our way for the snowmobile parking lot on Mount Spokane. I’m beginning to really love this place, only 30 miles from my door step is a winter oasis complete with ski runs, cross-county ski trails, snowshoe trails, warming huts, and unfortunately snowmobile trails. After visiting Bald Knob last week we decided to try our luck with the Beauty Mountain warming hut.”
