6:28 pm

Spokane’s new co-op is gearing up. I just received this:

Main Market Cooperative Board of Directors Holds First Public Meeting
Spokane, WA – The Main Market Co-Op Board of Directors is hosting a public meeting Wednesday, August 6, 2008. The meeting is at the Community Building Lobby, 35 West Main Street, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The Board of Directors has met regularly over the last couple of months to discuss the process of forming a consumer cooperative. The board members reflect a diverse group of representatives in the Spokane community. As board member Michael Woods, SJ of Gonzaga University shared, “We look forward to bringing the Inland Northwest an accessible downtown grocery store that focuses on regional, organic and sustainable foods and builds community using the cooperative ownership model.” (more…)

A Critical Mess

7:04 pm

Did you hear about the altercation at the Seattle Critical Mass ride on Friday? Well if you read about it Saturday in the Seattle Times you got a story that made it sound like a group of crazed riders attacked a driver. Today the the Times posted the story again–this time with comments from the cyclists–and a very different version of events emerges. Other witnesses now say the driver involved ran over over a cyclists’ leg before the altercation started. It’s hard for a reader to figure what exactly happened, but you have to wonder why the times posted the story on Saturday without any quotes from cyclists who were actually there.

Don’t Spend Conservation Futures $ on the YMCA building

5:18 pm

pt_y1.jpg

I just sent this letter off to City and County officials. I’m ready for the hate mail to pour in. What do you think?:

Dear Director Chase, Commisioner Mager, Commisioner Meilke, Commisioner Richard,

I urge you not to consider using Conservation Futures funds to acquire the YMCA property in Riverfront Park. I am puzzled as to why you would consider using County funds on this matter. The size and recreational value of the land is small, but the cost is huge. How many larger, more deserving, Conservation Futures properties will go un-purchased because of the money used on this parcel? As a member of the recreational and conservation community I think I speak for many when I say I’d trade the YMCA property in a heartbeat for more projects such as Antoine Peak. (more…)

Angry Bicycle Gang in PDX

4:54 pm

I usually only do one post a day but reader David Carroll
sent this in:

Found a news article about a horrible bike related incident in Portland. Thought you might be interested.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/07/angry_bicyclists_gang_up_on_th.html

This situation here is really weird. Most cyclists/driver incidents I read about involved drivers attacking cyclists, not the other way around.
I can, however, understand the frustration people have with cyclists who constantly ignore the law.

Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not ride your bike on the Fish Lake Trail to see the Cheney Rodeo? After doing some miles on the Fish Lake Trail nothing satisfies like the Corona Village Taqueria on 1810 Second St. I’d be there with you but my leg is busted up. Enjoy the great weather this weekend.

Water War

11:11 pm

green_lawn.jpg

Mayor Verner’s proposed new rules for water lawns has gotten a lot of folks talking. We here at Out There think the virtues of lush green lawns in July and August are vastly overrated. Put that water in the river. There is a interesting discussion of the new policy over at the MetroSpokane blog. What do you think?
