Thanksgiving Yoga

10:34 pm

Here’s some info about yoga on Thanksgiving and the day after:

Hi All,

Attached, please find the flyer for a Thanksgiving day practice to benefit Allie Rubin of Harmony Yoga. The practice is hosted by my teacher and great friend, Karen Sprute-Francovich of Garden Street Yoga in CDA.

I am so grateful to Karen for presenting this in support of Allie. If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute, see the mailing address on the flyer. I intend to participate and I will gladly provide the ride for those willing to commute from Spokane Valley…just let me know.

Also, a reminder to all about the practice at MSY the day AFTER Thanksgiving from 10:00 – 12:00 in support of ECEAP. Details: Karma Yoga practice at Main Street Yoga on Friday, November 28th (Day after Thanksgiving) from 10:00 – 12:00 pm.

Donations will benefit the Kneer family whom we are sponsoring through ECEAP (Early Childhood Education Assistance Program.)

Expect a well-rounded potpourri class: Devotion, chant, vinyasa flow, held asana, restoratives and a time for contemplation and meditation. This is an ALL LEVELS class.

Love and Light,

Kim

Judge Blocks Ferry County OHV Ordinance

6:10 pm

Just got this press release from the Quiet Communities Coalition. This seems like great news if you support non-motorized trails in Ferry County. We’ve been covering this issue for a couple years now, but I’m sure this isn’t the end.

Ferry County Permanently Prohibited from Implementing Off Highway Vehicle Ordinance

On November 20, 2008 Superior Court Judge, Michael P. Price signed and entered a stipulated order granting a permanent injunction in the case between Quiet Communities Coalition and Ferry County Commissioners.
The Order provides that:
1. Ferry County Ordinance 2007-22 and Ferry County Ordinance No. 2008-06 violate RCW Ch. 46.09, as at least some of the roads and road segments designated for off-road vehicle or off-highway vehicle use in those Ordinances fail to create direct connections between off-road vehicle recreation areas and cities of less than 3,000 people. The FBC has a cool post with mud puddle pics from the last cyclocross race of the the season at Riverside State Park. Good, wholesome fun. While you are there poke around the site check out details of the Full Moon Festivus Fiasco coming up in a couple weeks. Double-proof that cold weather doesn’t kill the bike shenanigans in this town.

Cross Country Regional Championships This Weekend

6:00 pm

I recently got a questionnaire from a national advertiser wanting to know if our market was good for running. Of course I went off. This is an amazing town for running. If Eugene, OR is “Track City USA” could Spokane be “Cross Country City USA?” Maybe. Check out this event release from the Spokane Regional Sports Commission:

2008 USATF Northwest Regional Cross Country Championships

(Spokane Valley, WA) – The Northwest Regional Cross Country Championships will take place this Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane Valley, hosted by the Spokane Regional Sports Commission. The regions top athletes will be competing and many preparing for the December 13, USATF National Club Cross country Championships. There will be approximately 250 athletes from Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. Cross country fans and media are welcome. There is no charge for admittance. (more…)

Bark Beetle: The Onslaught Continues

5:42 pm

Lodgepole Pine that has turned red after a bark beetle infestation.

I’ve read a lot about how bark beetles have been ravaging western forests in recent years. It’s difficult to parse all issues that potentially come into the mix: fire suppression, logging, climate change, rural development. But this article about bark beetles in the New York Times does a really good job touching on everything. The potential loss of forest is staggering. WARNING: the NYT times piece includes a graphic description of the beetle reproductive process.

Help Protect Wolves

5:34 pm

The Lands Council sent this new release to us today:

Help Protect The Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced its 2nd attempt at delisting the gray wolf in the northern Rocky Mountains.

The first attempt was quickly reversed in July by a federal judge, but not before state management programs led to the killing of over 100 wolves.

The geographical area at issue with this proposal includes Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and parts of Washington, Oregon, and Utah .

A wolf pack (2 adults and 6 pups) was discovered near Twisp, Washington in July 2008. Although their territory is outside the area now proposed for delisting, the delisting could potentially isolate them from all protected populations in the U.S. (more…)

The Cyclocross race this Sunday at Farragut State Park in Idaho made for a nearly perfect November afternoon. OTM columnist John Speare hired Loren Dudley and his fifteen person-van with bike trailer allowing us to assemble a serious posse for the event. Call us team Fred. My wife and I grabbed the kids, some sandwiches, and an Atom And His Package CD and we were off. Our group consisted of 5 racers (2 of which were cyclocross virgins) and 7-man cheering section. If you’ve never done a cyclocross race before it is the perfect combination of mountain biking and road racing–the best racers have skills from both disciplines. (more…)
